Health Benefits of Manuka Honey: What types of Manuka honey exist?

It is usually believed that honey is classified according to its UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) or its MGO content (Methylglyoxal).

However, these parameters do not define the types of honey, but rather relate to their properties.

To classify Manuka honey, the indicators listed in the following table are analyzed to determine if the honey is:

Monofloral: it is that elaborated mainly from the nectar of the flowers of Leptospermum scoparium. As bees fly far away, no honey comes exclusively from the flowers of the Manuka bush. Of the 5 attributes analyzed, Monofloral Manuka honey must meet all. Otherwise, it is a Manuka Multifloral honey.

Multifloral: is that produced from the nectar of flowers of different varieties. Bees use a significant amount of nectar from the flowers of the Manuka bush, but a good proportion of the substrate comes from other plants. Manuka Multifloral honey must meet the 4 criteria analyzed. If this does not happen, it is not Manuka honey.

  1. My mom was just telling me to get some natural honey…”it has to be from your area” she said. Do you know if there is something to getting honey locally or is this honey more unique? Great information. Thanks!

    1. Hi Gerri, it all depends on why you are using the honey. If you have allergies then local honey, made from local pollen, is recommended. Has this answered your question? Please let me know if there is anything else.
